Dear Ozzie's World Owner,
Just a quick note to make the running of Ozzie's World a little
easier for those of you who didn't dive right in to the manual!
If you have seen the introduction to any of the scenes one too many
times, you may skip it while it is playing by pressing the space bar
once. You may also go directly to the active scene by holding down
the shift key while clicking once on the map or the icons at either
corner of the scenes.
The entire Ozzie development team hopes you have as much fun using
Ozzie's World as we had creating it!
Have Fun!
The Ozzie Team
------------------- GETTING STARTED QUICKLY -------------------
Step 1 - Place the Ozzie's World CD in you CD-ROM drive.
Step 2 - The first time you use Ozzie's World you'll need to create
an icon for it in your Windows Program Manager. To do this simply
select "Run" from under the "File" menu at the top of the Program
Manager. At the command line type in D:\SETUP. An icon for Ozzie's
World will be created.
Step 3 - To start the program, double-click on the Ozzie's World icon.
Step 4 - Wait. The title screen will appear, then the opening scene.
Listen carefully as Ozzie shows you around, especially when he shows
you how to use the signpost...
Be sure to set your monitor size to 640 x 480 and your resolution to
256 colors (8 bit).
For additional help and instructions, click on the ambulance in the
program. For serious problems call the Ozzie's World Technical
Support Department at 918-742-2022.
-------------Technical Hints for PC/Windows Users -------------
1. Changes that can be made to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
This modification to AUTOEXEC.BAT seems to offer the best operating
environment for Ozzie's World. Even with this setup, we have observed
some "jumpieness" in the puzzles, and hidden pictures.
To make this change open the NOTEPAD application in the ACCESORIES
group. Then select Open command in the File menu. Then change the List
Files of Type by selecting All files (*.*) from the list that appears
when the down arrow is clicked. Under Directories, double click on the
C:\ to change to the main (or root) directory of the C: drive. Then
double-click on AUTOEXEC.BAT in the list on the left side. This will
open the AUTOEXEC.BAT and allow you to edit it. Add the following line:
LH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 256 /X
(If this line already exists in this file, just add the "1024 256 /X" to
the end of it.)
Please Note: Any "/L" arguments that are seen in this command should not
be changed. They are placed there by MEMMAKER for system optimization.
Removing them or altering them will change the amount of Low or
Conventional memory you have available and this could affect system
performance.
After the changes have been made, select the Save command from the
File menu. This will write the changes you have made back to the hard
drive. Then select the Exit command from the same menu to exit this
program. Windows should be exited and the computer rebooted to allow
the changes take effect.
2. General Protection Faults
If any General Protection Fault errors are experienced during execution
of Ozzie's World, there are two probable causes. First, Windows 3.11
and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 have a driver named SuperVGA 640x480,
256 colors that should be selected from the WINDOWS SETUP program.
If the driver is present, you should opt to KEEP the current driver.
The Windows version can be determined from the ABOUT PROGRAM MANAGER
selection under the HELP menu in the PROGRAM MANAGER. If this driver
is not available, the driver for your display set to 65K colors should
operate effectivly in most cases. Please note that 65K colors slows
the graphics down immensely and the first scene may draw erratically,
but no other ill effects should be noticed.
3. Ghosted Animations
When the video controller is set to 16 colors, the video is very sketchy,
animation is slow, and most figures are seen only as Outlines. Please see
the Note 2 above about preferred video driver settings.
4. Sluggish Operation
If the Puzzles and Games are very sluggish and there is a lot of CD
access the first minute or so of game useage see Note 1 about the changing
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Packard Bell and Acer computers may experience sluggishness outside of
these bounds. The Navigator program (and others like it) that load up
automatically will not unload normally. They must be deleted from the
StartUp folder and Windows restarted. This can be done, by selecting the
icon with a single mouse click, and pressing the Delete key. Windows should
then be exited and re-entered to ensure that Navigator is no longer active.
Low conventional memory resources can also cause sluggishness. The amount
of executable memory available should be greater than 560K as indicated by
the MEM command at the DOS prompt (C:>). If this is not the case, a memory
optimizer should be run to change this condition. For most users, the
MEMMAKER command will solve this. We recommend responding NO when asked
about programs needing EMS if all your applications are in Windows. This
should make the maximum amount of RAM available. If you have games that
require EMS, the respond YES instead.
For users with QEMM, the OPTIMIZE command will do the same.
5. No Sound
Use the mixer program that came with your specific sound card. This will
typically be in a folder in the PROGRAM MANAGER named the same as your
sound card (ie. Forte 16, SB Pro, Galaxy Pro). The cause is often one
level, such as the Wave level being set to zero.
